London’s pop-up scene is exciting and vibrant all year round, but the festive offerings in particular surpass our expectations without fail, and 2017 is set to be a smash hit success. Fantastic flavours, winter warmers and rich, filling menus are the name of the game. Options thus far look enticing and varied, so plan your routes carefully and drop in on as many venues as possible before spring rolls around!
Big Apple Brixton
The team behind Brixton’s Beach Boulevard are treating us to an alternative winter pop-up. The theme this season is late 1970s New York City, so there’ll be mounds of delicious Americana: pizza from Grandmaster Slice, fried chicken from Plucky’s, burgers from Burger Bear and steaming bowls of the ultimate comfort food – macaroni cheese from Mac to the Future. You’d do well to wash it all down with honey tequila hot chocolate, or take things up a gear and sip on an espresso martini with a Christmassy twist. Once you’ve eaten your fill and are ready to rumble, try some of the disco yoga classes or dip into a cabaret show.
Pergola on the Roof
Tempted by a slice from pizza masters Made of Dough? Hungry for a warming bowl or Ramen from Tonkotsu? Perhaps you’ll have room for a burger from Patty and Bun? Waste no time in getting to Pergola on the Roof, this year on the roof of Paddington Central. There’ll be space for you somewhere in the forest of 850 seats (all covered and heated), and if you head up on a weekend there’ll be DJs and live music.
The Last Days of Shoreditch
Bringing East London’s independent nightlife and delectable street food offerings together under one roof (with plenty of heaters), The Last Days of Shoreditch presents you with the opportunity to sample jerk chicken, gyoza dumplings, truffle mac-and-cheese balls, Caribbean cocktails and much, more more. Dance the night away to music from a line-up of celebrity DJs including Eastern Electrics, and when you need a break, sit down in the mezzanine restaurant and grab a pulled pork sandwich.
A welcome return from chef Jimmy Garcia’s Verbier-sponsored Alpine pop-up, Clapham North is lighting a roaring fire and inviting you to snuggle down. Decadent seafood options (think gin-cured salmon and smoked cod’s roe) sit alongside cheese platters, chophouse favourites and, of course, Swiss fondues. Garcia certainly hasn’t scrimped on the drink menu either, with Swiss wines and liqueurs available in plentiful supply, and mulled wine, cider and ginger ale on tap for when things get really chilly.
Mac & Wild City
If it’s hot and heavy Scottish fare that you’re in the market for, make your way to the City for Mac & Wild’s heated terrace, where you can feast on venison and haggis, lashings of whisky, scotch eggs and sausage rolls. If you like what you taste, try a few of the food preparation master classes or step in to the shooting simulator room for the full experience.
